Seed funding

The Health in Society Research Network has 50,000 Euro per year available to support research and related activities of its members.

  • There are two calls per year: 31 May and 31 December
  • Decision on funding: 30 June and 26 Februar

The aim is to encourage cooperation between members of the network, collaboration with strategic partner universities, and bidirectional exchange and interaction with society.

The grants are suitable for any research projects—or preparatory work—within the thematic scope of Health in Society, as well as related outreach and third mission activities and member-organized events like workshops.

We aim to create an unbureaucratic, flexible small grant that supports a diversity of topics and methods.

Who can apply?

Collaborative teams of at least two members of the Health in Society Research Network.

Members whose proposals have been successful may submit a new application only in the following calendar year.

Funding amount

  • 7,000 Euro for standard applications
  • 8,000 Euro for applications involving collaboration with one of the university’s strategic partner universities (e.g., members of CircleU)
  • 1,000 Euro for outreach activities or member events (e.g., workshops, colloquia)

The amount of projects and activities funded per call is subject to fluctuations, depending on the number of submissions.

Partial funding of events and activities is possible.

Requirements

Health in Society pursues two key goals:

  • to connect health researchers with one another and
  • to establish bidirectional connections between research and society.

Therefore, every project team must include a collaborative, preferably interdisciplinary, component and an element of active engagement with society. This may involve co-creating research with members of society in a participatory manner or translating part of the project into a contribution to the public good.

Submission details

If a proposal has not been funded in a previous call, resubmission is possible up to two times.

Proposals must be submitted via e-mail to healthinsociety@univie.ac.at by 31 May or 31 December, 23:59 as a single file, using 12-pt font, 1.5 line spacing, and 2 cm margins, and must be no more than five pages (excluding references).

  • Project timeline and feasibility, listing specific activities, their timing, and potential risks, along with mitigation strategies to ensure project completion
  • Detailed budget
  • Explanation of the society-involvement component, such as citizen science, participatory research, transdisciplinary approaches, or third-mission activities
  • Brief description of potential third-party funding opportunities that could arise from the project

The results of projects funded by these small grants will be presented at the annual meeting of the network and published on the network’s website. Projects should be completed within one year of receiving the grant.
